How effective will a pressure washer High-pressure water cleaning machine be as opposed to acid washing Acid treatment to remove surface scale my pool once it’s drained

Since it’s PebbleTec Pebble-based pool surface finish and about 10 years old, that changes things a bit.

Pebble finishes are much tougher than plaster, but they also trap calcium Hard water mineral causing scale buildup between the stones — which is very common in Phoenix because of our hard water.

Here’s the honest breakdown for your situation:

🔵 Pressure Washing on 10-Year PebbleTec

Good for:
    •    Dirt
    •    Algae film Thin algae growth layer
    •    Loose scale Flaky mineral deposits on surface
    •    Prep before refill

Not great for:
    •    Embedded calcium between pebbles
    •    Heavy white crusting Thick hardened mineral buildup
    •    Mineral staining Discoloration from bonded mineral deposits that’s bonded to the surface

Pressure washing alone usually won’t fully remove Arizona calcium buildup on a 10-year pebble surface.

🔴 Acid Washing PebbleTec

This can work — but it must be done correctly.

Pros:
    •    Dissolves calcium scale effectively
    •    Brightens the stones
    •    Restores original color contrast

Cons:
    •    Can slightly etch the cement matrix Binder holding pebbles together holding the pebbles
    •    Overdoing it can expose pebbles more aggressively
    •    Shouldn’t be done repeatedly unless needed

At 10 years old, a properly done light acid wash is generally safe if the surface is in decent condition.

⚠️ Even Better Option: Bead Blasting Glass bead abrasive cleaning process

In Phoenix, many pros now recommend:
    •    Glass bead blasting
    •    Or media blasting Abrasive blasting using fine media

It removes scale without chemically eating the surface.
More expensive — but gentler and often longer-lasting.

My Recommendation (Based on Age + Arizona Conditions)

If the surface:
    •    Feels rough and crusty → You likely need acid wash or bead blast.
    •    Just looks dull with mild scale → Start with pressure washing first.
    •    Has heavy white scaling in pockets → Pressure washer probably won’t be enough.

Important Arizona Warning

Don’t leave a pebble pool empty long in Phoenix heat.
Groundwater + heat expansion can cause serious issues.

If you’re draining:
    •    Do it during a mild weather window.
    •    Refill immediately after cleaning.

If you want, describe:
    •    Is the scaling patchy or uniform?
    •    Is it mostly white haze or thick buildup?
    •    Any dark staining?

I’ll tell you which route makes the most sense cost-to-benefit.
